October 20, 2025 – A widespread outage in Amazon Web Services (AWS), the tech giant’s cloud computing platform, caused significant disruptions to numerous websites and applications early Monday morning, impacting millions of users worldwide. The outage, which began in the early hours, affected a broad range of services, including Amazon’s own e-commerce platform, as well as popular apps and services such as Venmo, Ring, Slack, WhatsApp, Coinbase, Lloyds Bank, and Perplexity, among others. The outage, reported around 3:00 AM PDT, led to slowdowns, error messages, and complete service unavailability for many users. Social media platforms lit up with complaints as businesses and individuals struggled to access critical services. AWS, a backbone for countless online operations, acknowledged the issue on its status dashboard, stating that engineers were “actively working to resolve the issue” but provided no immediate timeline for full restoration.

The ripple effect was felt across industries. Venmo users reported failed transactions, while Slack outages disrupted workplace communications for remote and hybrid teams. Ring’s home security systems experienced connectivity issues, and Coinbase users faced challenges accessing cryptocurrency trading platforms. Major institutions like Lloyds Bank reported difficulties with online banking, and AI-powered search platform Perplexity also went offline temporarily.Experts attribute the outage to a technical issue within AWS’s infrastructure, though Amazon has yet to release an official statement detailing the cause.

“Cloud services like AWS are the invisible scaffolding of the internet,” said tech analyst Dr. Maria Gonzalez. “When they falter, the impact is immediate and far-reaching.”By mid-morning, some services began to recover, with Amazon reporting partial restoration of affected systems.
