TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State University (FSU) is on high alert following reports of an active shooter near the Student Union on its Tallahassee campus. The incident, which began unfolding around 11:01 a.m. EDT on Thursday, April 17, 2025, has prompted a swift response from law enforcement and university officials, with emergency alerts urging students, faculty, and staff to seek shelter and remain vigilant.

According to an FSU Alert posted on X at 11:02 a.m., the active shooter was reported in the area of the Student Union. "Police are on scene or on the way. Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures," the alert stated. The university's emergency notification system emphasized the need for individuals to secure themselves and avoid the affected area.

Videos show emergency responders at the scene and students appearing to flee after a reported shooting at Florida State University.

Local news outlets, including WCTV and WJHG, confirmed that police are actively responding to the situation, with additional law enforcement en route to the scene. The university has advised those on campus to remain sheltered, lock doors, and stay clear of windows while awaiting further updates. Nearby Leon County schools have been placed under a lockout as a precautionary measure, though specific schools were not identified by district spokesperson Chris Petley.

Unverified posts on X have added to the unfolding narrative, with some claiming one shooter is deceased and another may still be at large, though these reports remain unconfirmed by official sources. FSU’s Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science (EOAS) building has been reported as safe, but the university continues to urge caution across the campus.

Dan Bongino: FBI is on the scene at FSU:

The situation remains fluid, with limited details available about the shooter or potential casualties. FSU officials and law enforcement have not yet provided information on the motive or circumstances leading to the incident. The university community and surrounding areas are on edge as authorities work to secure the campus and provide clarity.

This incident follows a history of safety concerns at FSU, including a 2014 shooting at Strozier Library that left three students injured and the gunman dead. The university has since implemented active shooter training and safety protocols, but today’s events underscore the ongoing challenges of campus security.

As the situation develops, FSU is directing individuals to monitor official channels, including the FSU Alert system and local news outlets, for real-time updates. The public is asked to avoid the area and refrain from spreading unverified information that could hinder response efforts.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

FSU Tallahassee is a public college located in Florida's state capital. The school has around 45,000 students with movie star Burt Reynolds and The Doors singer Jim Morrison among its famous alumni.
