NEW YORK, July 28, 2025 — Chaos erupted in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening as a gunman armed with an assault rifle opened fire outside 345 Park Avenue, a 44-story office building housing the National Football League (NFL) headquarters, among other prominent firms. The attack, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. ET, left four people dead, including an off-duty New York City police officer working private security, and several others injured, according to multiple reports.

The suspect, identified by law enforcement as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, fled into the building after the initial shooting, prompting a swift response from the New York Police Department (NYPD). Authorities believe Tamura died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor of the skyscraper, which also houses offices for Blackstone, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan, and the Consulate General of Ireland. The NFL occupies floors five through eight of the building.

NFL employees were immediately instructed to shelter in place, with a security alert sent to staff reading, “Do not exit the building. Secure your location and hide until law enforcement clears your floor. Please switch phones to silent,” according to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington.

No NFL employees have been reported injured, and it remains unclear whether the league’s headquarters was a specific target of the attack.NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed via social media that the “lone shooter has been neutralized” and the scene was contained. The NYPD urged the public to avoid the area around East 52nd Street between Park and Lexington Avenues, citing heavy police activity and emergency vehicle presence.

Surveillance footage obtained by NBC 4 New York showed a man, believed to be Tamura, entering the building with what appeared to be an assault rifle, dressed in a sport coat and button-down shirt.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams addressed the incident, urging residents to take safety precautions and avoid the vicinity. “I have been briefed on the situation,” Hochul posted on X, while Adams described the event as an “active shooter investigation.” Congressional leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, expressed prayers for the victims and gratitude for first responders.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, with the FBI providing support at the scene, according to Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Law enforcement sources reported that Tamura was found with a concealed carry permit from Nevada, though details about his background or intentions are still emerging.

The incident has shaken Midtown Manhattan, a bustling hub of corporate and cultural activity, and raised questions about security protocols at high-profile office buildings. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release further details about the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
