Laredo, Texas — Six people were found dead inside a sealed Union Pacific cargo boxcar at a remote rail yard near the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday afternoon, authorities said, triggering an active investigation into what officials are treating as a mass-casualty incident.

The grim discovery was made around 3 p.m. local time on May 10, 2026, when a Union Pacific employee performing a routine inspection of train cars at the Laredo railyard spotted the bodies inside one of the boxcars. The rail yard is located near Interstate 35 mile marker 13, close to 12100 Jim Young Way in north Laredo. Laredo Police Department officers and firefighters responded immediately and confirmed that all six individuals were deceased. No survivors were found inside the car.

Laredo Police Investigator Joe E. Baeza (also referred to as PIO Jose Espinoza in some reports) confirmed the details to local media. The identities, ages, genders, and nationalities of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin and autopsies by the Webb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The cause of death remains undetermined, but officials noted the extreme heat in the region. Temperatures in Laredo reached the upper 90s°F (approximately 97°F) on Sunday, with a heat index exceeding 100°F. The boxcar was described as sealed, raising the possibility of heat-related deaths or other factors associated with smuggling attempts — a pattern seen in previous border-area tragedies involving trains and tractor-trailers.

Union Pacific issued a statement expressing sorrow over the incident. “Union Pacific is saddened by this incident and is working closely with law enforcement to investigate,” said company spokesman Daryl Bjoraas.

Multiple agencies are now involved, including the Laredo Police Department, Union Pacific Railroad Police, and potentially federal authorities. Investigators are examining possible human smuggling connections given Laredo’s location as a major rail hub near the border, where stowaways on freight trains are not uncommon. However, police have stressed that the probe is ongoing and no conclusions have been reached.

As of Monday morning, May 11, 2026, no further updates on identities or an official cause of death have been released. Autopsies are expected to provide more clarity in the coming days. This incident echoes past migrant smuggling tragedies in South Texas, including the 2022 discovery of 53 people dead in an abandoned tractor-trailer near San Antonio.
