On Friday, July 12, 2024, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) carrying five people drove off the road and into an inactive geyser, known as the Semi-Centennial Geyser, in Yellowstone National Park. The geyser is located near Roaring Mountain between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction.

The passengers were able to escape the 105°F (41°C) acidic water on their own and were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The road was closed for about two hours while the SUV was extracted from 9 feet of water.

The Semi-Centennial Geyser has been inactive since a major eruption in 1922. It is a large, deep pool of acidic water alongside the Grand Loop Road in Mammoth Hot Springs and the Norris Geyser Basin.

Fortunately, all five people involved in the incident were able to escape without serious harm. 17GEN4.com
