20+ Displaced in Phoenix Apartment Fire Near I-17 & Glendale Ave | Latest Updates | 17GEN4 News

17GEN4 News – Phoenix, Ariz. May 9, 2026 — More than 20 people were displaced after a fast-moving apartment fire ripped through a three-story complex near Interstate 17 and Glendale Avenue Friday evening, but officials say everyone escaped safely with no injuries reported.
Phoenix Fire Department crews were dispatched around 6:45 p.m. on May 8 after reports of a tree fire in the area of 25th Avenue and Glendale. The flames quickly spread to the nearby apartment building, turning what firefighters described as “one of those fires that just got too big, too fast.”
At the height of the response, between 55 and 75 firefighters were on scene battling the blaze. Heavy smoke was visible from a distance, billowing over the neighborhood and affecting the I-17 corridor. The fire impacted approximately 10 units through direct flames and heavy smoke damage.
Phoenix Fire Captain D. Lee confirmed that all residents were able to evacuate before crews arrived, preventing any civilian or firefighter injuries. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the 20 to 25 displaced residents with immediate needs such as temporary housing, food, and clothing.
As of Saturday morning, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire officials have not released the exact address of the complex but described it as a multi-unit residential building in the central Phoenix area close to the freeway interchange.
No updates on structural damage assessments or long-term displacement numbers have been released since late Friday night. Neighbors reported thick smoke lingering in the area for roughly two hours as crews worked to fully extinguish the flames.
This incident marks the latest in a string of structure fires affecting Valley apartment complexes in recent weeks. 17GEN4 News will continue monitoring the investigation and provide updates as more information becomes available from Phoenix Fire and city officials. Residents in the area are asked to avoid the scene to allow emergency personnel to complete their work.
